Case of Boualem Sansal in Algeria

Parliament adopted a resolution on the case of Boualem Sansal, a French-Algerian writer detained in Algeria since November 2024. The text calls on Algerian authorities to release Sansal and all those arbitrarily detained for expressing opinions, and to amend penal code articles to protect press freedom. It also condemns the detention of at least 215 prisoners of opinion and calls for allowing foreign journalists to operate freely in Algeria. Parliament asks Algeria to implement UN recommendations and end intimidation of lawyers and judges, and expresses concern over a political party reform.

EU/Republic of Serbia agreement on operational activities carried out by the European Border and Coast Guard Agency in the Republic of Serbia

The European Parliament voted on the agreement between the European Union and the Republic of Serbia on operational activities by the European Border and Coast Guard Agency in Serbia. Parliament gave its consent, meaning the agreement can be concluded. The agreement enables the Agency to conduct joint operations and deploy border management teams in Serbia, including at its borders with non-EU countries. Parliament asks the Agency to promptly inform it of implementation activities and to include cooperation assessments in annual reports.

Amending Regulation (EU) 2018/1806 as regards Vanuatu

The proposal amends Regulation (EU) 2018/1806 to remove Vanuatu from the list of countries whose nationals are exempt from the visa requirement for short stays in the EU. Parliament adopted its position at first reading, taking over the Commission proposal, which means the visa exemption for Vanuatu will be cancelled. Parliament calls on the Commission to refer the matter back if it substantially amends its proposal, and instructs its President to forward the position to the Council, the Commission, and national parliaments.
