2. Framework for achieving climate neutrality

   Parliament adopted its position on a proposed law amending the EU climate law to set a 2040 climate target and strengthen the path to climate neutrality by 2050. The adopted text sets an EU-wide domestic target of at least 90% emission reduction by 2040 relative to 1990 levels, with a limited role for permanent removals. It also calls for support for farmers and rural communities, including funding and measures to address fuel and energy costs. Parliament asks the Commission to refer the matter back if it substantially amends its proposal.
