Parliament adopted a resolution on the EU Global Human Rights Sanctions Regime, known as the EU Magnitsky Act, which allows the EU to impose asset freezes and travel bans on individuals and entities responsible for serious human rights abuses worldwide. The text calls for a more coherent and strategic use of the regime, including an impact assessment, better alignment with international partners, improved enforcement, and enhanced transparency and accountability. It also proposes closing implementation loopholes, preventing sanction circumvention, and extending the regime to cover corruption and immediate family members of violators. Parliament asks for a review of the regime before its prolongation until December 2026 to address shortcomings and reinforce the EU's commitment to human rights and the rule of law.
