C. whereas there is an urgent need to continue to defend and strengthen the rules-based international order and its institutions, the universal norms, values and principles of the UN Charter such as human rights and international justice, multilateralism, and the Helsinki Final Act, in particular as regards the non-violation of international borders; whereas the EU is, by nature, a promoter of the multilateral interdependence of different institutional actors;

Condemns the aggressive and imperialist rhetoric expressed by US President Trump at the UN General Assembly, which openly threatened peace, sovereignty and multilateralism; notes that such discourse glorifies illegal wars, sanctions and unilateral coercive measures, including support for the genocide in Gaza and threats against sovereign nations; stresses that such positions undermine the very principles of the UN Charter; calls, therefore, for alignment with such policies to be rejected and for an independent path of peace, cooperation and solidarity with the Global South to be pursued;

Stresses that the EU’s political and diplomatic efforts have hitherto been focused almost exclusively on its eastern border, thereby increasing the risk of direct confrontation with the Russian Federation; believes that such an imbalanced approach undermines the broader interests and security of the majority of Member States; emphasises the need for a balanced and comprehensive assessment of the EU’s geopolitical challenges; calls for the strategic importance of the Mediterranean – which has been unduly relegated to a secondary role – to be restored to the core of the EU’s external action; urges the Commission and the Council to promptly re-establish equilibrium within the EU’s strategic priorities, ensuring that equal and coherent attention is devoted to both the eastern and southern dimensions of its foreign and security policy;
