Parliament adopted a resolution on the recent dismissals and arrests of mayors in Türkiye, citing cases such as the dismissal of Sofya Alagas, mayor of Siirt, and the arrest of Riza Akpolat, mayor of Istanbul's Besiktas district. It condemns the replacement of elected mayors with state-appointed trustees and calls on Turkish authorities to end this practice, allowing elected representatives to serve their mandates. Parliament asks the EU to consider sanctions on Turkish officials involved and forwards the resolution to EU institutions and Turkish authorities.
Before the final vote, MEPs decided on 4 amendments (4 rejected) and 3 parts of the text voted on separately (3 adopted). 7 alternative motions lapsed once the text was adopted.
