Joins the call made by a coalition of around 20 Haitian and international NGOs at the 2024 United Nations Permanent Forum on People of African Descent, and echoed by UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk, for Haiti to be reimbursed in some way for the colonial debt imposed in 1825, recognising that this historical extortion drained the country’s resources for generations, undermined its development, weakened its institutions and helped create the conditions of poverty, dependence and fragility that continue to expose Haiti to violence, criminal capture and exploitation; |
