Highlights that animal-based products contain a number of essential nutrients and other compounds that are beneficial to human health, and that they are missing from the diets of many populations around the world, including among those with the highest incomes. People with good economic resources can follow adequate diets by limiting the meat, dairy products and eggs they consume. However, this approach should not be recommended to the population as a whole, especially not to those demographics – children and teenagers, pregnant and lactating women, women of reproductive age, the elderly and people living with chronic diseases – that have greater dietary needs. The foremost bio-evolutionary, anthropological, physiological, and epidemiological evidence-based research indicates that eating meat, dairy products and eggs regularly as part of a balanced diet is beneficial for human health;

Underlines the need to stop and reverse the trend of decapitalisation of the livestock sector and ensure full reciprocity of EU standards for imported products, as well as the urgency of updating the CAP budget in real terms, in the light of accumulated inflation; emphasises, in this connection, the priority of enhancing support for the outermost regions, the specific structural and geographic characteristics of which involve significantly higher costs for farmers; calls on the European Commission to update the financial allocations for POSEI in the next multiannual financial framework to reflect at least cumulative inflation since 2007 and regrets that the 2 % deflator applied to direct payments has not also been considered for POSEI in the current MFF; stresses, however, that mere indexation to inflation is insufficient to meet the growing challenges faced by farmers in the outermost regions, where production, transport, logistics and supply costs are structurally higher; reiterates that fair and suitable funding for POSEI is essential to guarantee the continuity of farming activity, the sustainability of farms and the Union’s economic, social and territorial cohesion, in line with Article 349 TFEU;
