1a. Underlines the important role played by the Committee on Petitions in the previous term as the voice of citizens in the face of abuses during the COVID-19 pandemic, lack of transparency, discrimination and violations of fundamental rights; recalls its contribution to combating discrimination against Romanian and Bulgarian citizens before their countries joined the Schengen area, starting with Petition 0004/2023 submitted by Răzvan-Eugen Nicolescu on behalf of the Asociația pentru Energie Curată și Combaterea Schimbărilor Climatice, which led to the plenary resolution on accession; acknowledges the examination of Petition 1168/2023 submitted by Mihai Igna on behalf of the ‘Together we bring prosperity’ Association, calling for the restitution of Romanian national treasures held in the Russian Federation; emphasises the historical significance of this issue for Member States affected by acts of looting, particularly in the context of the war in Ukraine, and stresses the Committee’s commitment to protecting cultural heritage, upholding citizens’ rights and supporting Romania’s legitimate claims, as reflected in the subsequent plenary resolutions;
